My Nervous System Needed Backup

apollo neuro

⚠️ A fair warning: this review is longer than my attention span. ⚠️

I'll be brutally honest (as per usual).

When my mom gave me an Apollo Neuro as a gift, I was about 99.9% convinced it would end up in the same category as every other wellness gadget I've ever rolled my eyes at.

You know the ones.

The products that promise to reduce stress, improve sleep, balance your nervous system, blah blah blah.

I wasn't buying it.

But I was exhausted.

I struggle with sleep, and my nervous system is permanently running somewhere between slightly stressed and a complete dumpster fire.

So, if there was even a slight chance this thing could help, I figured I had nothing to lose.

So now I'm writing a review about a wearable vibration device that I cannot go without.

What Is Apollo Neuro? (👈🏼Click here for their website)

Apollo Neuro is a wearable, non-invasive vagus nerve stimulator designed to help regulate your nervous system through gentle vibrations (called "Vibes").

What is a vagus nerve?

Also known as the vagal nerves, they are the main nerves of your parasympathetic nervous system. It controls body functions such as digestion, heart rate, and your immune system. These body functions are completely involuntary, which means you cannot control them.

Other functions of the vagal nerves:

  • Skin and muscle sensations

  • Taste

  • Speech

  • Mood

  • Immune responses

  • Mucus and saliva production

  • Urine output

If you've never looked into the vagus nerve before, I highly recommend spending a few minutes reading about it.

I went down the rabbit hole myself and found it fascinating.

The device can be worn on your wrist or ankle, or clipped to clothing, and connects to an app that lets you choose different vibration programs based on what you're trying to accomplish.

Need energy? There's a Vibe for that.

Need focus? There's a Vibe for that.

Need to calm down before you start responding with your inside thoughts?

There's a Vibe for that too.

The idea behind Apollo is that the vibrations stimulate the vagus nerve and activate your parasympathetic nervous system.

The Free Vibes

Apollo Neuro Back

The back of my Apollo…uh…no, my dog didn’t try to chew it up.

Okay, I lied.

He did. 😬

Apollo includes several programs that don't require a subscription:

  • Energy

  • Social

  • Focus

  • Recover

  • Calm

  • Power Nap

  • Unwind

  • Sleep

Personally, I use:

  • Energy

  • Focus

  • Calm

  • Recover

  • Sleep

And occasionally Power Nap when my children somehow allow me to exist horizontally during daylight hours. If you know, you know.

Apollo also releases a "Vibe of the Month," which gives users something new to try each month.

The App Is Actually Helpful

One thing I appreciated was that the app doesn't just throw a device at you and wish you luck.

There's an entire "How It Works" section with videos covering:

  • How Apollo was developed

  • Whether it actually works

  • How long the benefits take to appear

  • How to use the wearable device properly

For someone who started this experience as a professional skeptic, I appreciated being able to dig into the science and reasoning behind it.

An Added Feature

Scheduling.

You can create a daily routine and have Apollo automatically cycle through different vibes throughout the day without opening the app.

Energy in the morning.

Focus during work.

Calm when life starts life-ing.

Sleep at bedtime.

Once I set my schedule, I barely had to think about it.

Did It Actually Work?

Let's get to the question everyone is really here for:

Does this thing actually work?

To my surprise, I think it does.

According to the Apollo app, I've logged 22,901 minutes of use so far. That's not "I tried it for a few days and formed an opinion" territory. That's "I wear this thing enough that my family would probably describe it as part of my personality" territory.

Apollo says I'm averaging about 9 extra minutes of sleep per night. On paper, that doesn't sound particularly impressive.

If someone told me to spend hundreds of dollars for an extra nine minutes of sleep, I'd probably laugh.

The numbers only tell part of the story.

The biggest changes I've noticed aren't necessarily the ones that show up in a graph.

The Sleep Vibe has become part of my nightly routine, and when I forget to wear my Apollo, I notice.

Not because I'm staring at sleep data the next morning, but because I genuinely feel like I sleep better with it than without it.

I've also noticed a difference in my mood.

Now, I'm not claiming this thing magically transformed me into a permanently calm, patient human being. I still have kids. I still have stress. I still occasionally contemplate running away to a cabin in the woods.

But I do feel more regulated.

The best way I can describe it is that my nervous system doesn't seem to jump into panic mode as quickly. I feel calmer, less overwhelmed, and better able to recover from stressful moments than I did before I started using it.

Could some of that be routine? Maybe.

Could some of it be placebo? Possibly.

But when a skeptic like me ends up wearing something almost every day, sleeping with it every night, and noticing a difference in both sleep and mood, that's probably worth noting.

I went into this experience expecting absolutely nothing.

Instead, I ended up becoming one of those annoying people who won't stop talking about how much they like it.

The Downsides

The biggest downside is the price.

At the time of writing this review, the Apollo Neuro is listed at approximately $448 on Apollo's website, making it a significant investment for a wellness device.

Apollo also offers an optional membership for $89.99 per year after a free 7-day trial, adding an extra expense if you want access to premium features and content.

Some additional content and premium features are included with the membership, but the free Vibes alone gave me enough functionality to determine whether I liked the device.

That's not exactly an impulse purchase.

If you're unsure you'll use it consistently, the price tag may be hard to justify. I completely understand that.

My only other complaint is that when I wear it on my ankle, there's about a 75% chance I look like I'm on house arrest.

Nobody has actually asked me if I'm being monitored by the state... yet. But every time I catch a glimpse of it peeking out from under my pant leg, I have questions.

That said, after logging 22,901 minutes of use, I can honestly say mine has earned its keep. The battery charges quickly, which is important because it spends far more time on my body than it does on the charger.

Do I wish it were cheaper?

Absolutely.

Would I replace it tomorrow if mine stopped working?

I'd have to.

My Brutally Honest Opinion

I expected this thing to be a gimmick.

Instead, it became one of the few wellness products I've used consistently.

Is it magic?

No.

IMBHO Obsessed

Is it going to solve every problem in your life?

Also no.

Will it replace therapy, medication, healthy habits, or getting your life together?

Annnnnd…another no.

But for improving sleep, helping me feel calmer, and giving my perpetually overloaded nervous system a little extra support?

I'm surprisingly obsessed with it.

And if you had told me a year ago that I'd be writing a glowing review about a device that gently vibrates my ankle, you would have had to take me down the rabbit hole yourself.

Yet here we are.
